The Jolly - South

10 July 1992 Built in 1978-79 and sited on Melville Street, a new road which was laid out on the site of South Street.(on the 1905 map it is actually on the end of what was Digby Street). The alignment is confirmed by St Peter's Church on the horizon. This was an unusual round building. It was never a success and demolished later in the 1990s. It closed when the Co-op's Pioneer/Leo's store was bought by Mecca Bingo (which opened in 1997). With the Bingo being licensed and Mecca owning the whole site (including Park Road Post Office) its Jolly days were over. |
