From
Isaac Ball 'The Coburg Arms at the corner of Sefton St / Stanhope St
was nicknamed 'The Devil(s)' presumably as a counterpoint to 'The Angel' further up Stanhope St.'

In early trade directories (1858) this
is called the Transatlantic Hotel and is at 1-3 Stanhope Street..
By the 1911Gore, 1,3,5,7,9 Stanhope Street comprised the Coburg and on the map of the time two pubs are shown in this site. It is assumed that the right hand, red brick building was then
part of the Coburg.
By 1938 Gore 7 and 9 are no longer a pub and belong to an engineering company.
This distinction continues to the present day.
