The Eros fountain seen in the depths of winter over a frozen
lake.
The Fountain was a gift from George Audley, a copy of the Eros fountain created in bronze
and aluminium by Sir Alfred Gilbert. It was opened
in Sefton Park in 1932. Although George Audley was now dead, Gilbert himself attended the
unveiling.
The Eros fountain was linked to
the Samuel Smith obelisk by an avenue of elm trees.
Unfortunately Sefton Park was one of the first areas to
suffer from Dutch Elm Disease.
