This
large pub on Lawrence Road predates most of the shops, terraces
and buildings in the area and dates back to the time that
Salisbury Road was developed, again before the Victorian terracing
was built. At this time nearby Salisbury Road (which is still wider than
all of the other nearby streets) was the main throughfare from
the toxteth boundary, on Smithdown Road to what was then Wavertree
Lane (Road and later Picton Road).
To the right of screen
note the small (green) building, at the back of the pub, which has
all of the hallmarks of a stable. To the left is a large open area.
The was open from at least the early 1950s and used as a car park. I
have coloured it differently on the map, however I do not know if
this was formerly a building, a collapse or a bombing casualty.
