St.Paul's Church of England School, in Byles Street, was opened in 1855, although the 'Liverpool Echo', 8th October 1854 states that 'the foundation of the school goes back even further to the 'Old Cropper's School'. (That school presumably supported by John and Anne Cropper) for the poor, where 'The Bible, sewing and other recognised essentials were taught' (Conybeare, T. A., 'Dingle Bank', 1925, pp.50-51). Robert Griffiths writes that John Cropper erected a school in Miles Street, many years before the school boards were thought of. He records Mr & Mrs Robinson as master and mistress there. 'Croppers Old School' was afterwards purchased for St. Pauls Church and the site covered with St Paul's Church Institute.

Although the school was opened in 1855, of the records deposited in LRO, only one volume survives from that date. Log books commence in 1862 but no admission or withdrawal registers before 1883 appear to have survived.

St. Paul's Church of England (Controlled ) School was still listed in City of Liverpool Education Committee, 'Educational Establishments', 1971 and appears to have survived until 1970. (St. Paul's Church was demolished in January 1975).
