Robert Griffiths records that John Cropper erected a school in Miles Street, many years before the school boards were thought of. He records Mr & Mrs Robinson as master and mistress there. 'Croppers Old School' was afterwards purchased for St. Pauls Church and the site covered with this institute.

Many Church of England parishes erected what they called Institutes. These were for the educational and social use of the parish. This is one such building, St. Paul's (Belvidere Road) Church Institute situated in Miles Street.

The foundation stone, laid on March 2nd 1898, records that this was the 50th anniversary of the consecration of St. Paul's Church. The date is exact!

This institute is undergoing renovation at the moment.
