Although shown as 'The Grange' on the 1908 map and in later directories, this property is shown in 1881 as 'Dudley House'. It was later renamed to 'The Grange'. The building was, like the adjacent Priory, constructed for James Sothern.

In 1926 the occupant was Colonel Samuel Heywood Melly. The Melly family had lived in the area for many year and the adjacent Melly Road is named for the family as are the Melly fountains scattered about the city. Col Melly's grandson, the jazz musician, George Melly, was born in nearby Linnet Lane on 17th August 1926, living later at Ivanhoe Road.

The house became neglected and 'The Grange' was demolished in 1956 some 20 years after the adjacent 'Priory' suffered the same fate. Two small lodges stood until the 1960s but these too have now gone and only a few red sandstone blocks remain.
