Mersey shore - Otterspool

The section south from around the end of Fulwood Park to the Toxteth boundary at the Osklesbrok at Otterspool itself.  Apart from the Sandstone outcrops of the Keuper beds at Dingle, the original foreshore was a series of low banks of clays and gravel which were always being eroded. Sea walls existed in this area for a long time but in the 1930 a lot of work was done to stabilse the foreshore and reclaim land from the river. The views towards Fulwood below, taken from about the same place, show how rapidly work progressed at that time.

The system used was to construct banks on the seaward side of the shore and then fill the 'lagoon' area in between. To this end temporary railway tracks were laid to assist dumping. The materials used on the earliest works were largely household refuse and diggings from the first Mersey tunnel. Later rubble from the Liverpool Blitz was also used. In places it appears that dredged sand from the river itself was used.
