14th May 1909
This photograph was originally taken
to show the Mulberry Tree in the foreground, which would have been a venerable
tree to have reached this size.
The hall is clearly in an advanced state of
disrepair or demolition. Parts of the photograph, not presented here,
show distant greenhouses and even more distant chimneys - the latter, presumably,
of houses on nearby Smithdown Road or Lidderdale Road.
The grounds of
the hall sloped down to Lidderdale road, the boundary being made by the Upper
Brook which would, in 1909, have still flowed at the surface. Housing and
shops now occupy the site of Penketh Hall
