 The
Old Pine Apple in 1860 after a photograph by Robert Griffiths 1907
|
The Old Pine Apple Inn stood on Park Road. This
is a view of the property in 1860, probably from Park Road.
In 1889 Rev Richard Postance MA, wrote about
......."The Pine Apple Tavern and Bowling Green, which many will remember as the terminus of a line of omnibuses, and a favourite place of resort.
The
original 'Old Pine Apple Inn' which dated back before 1765 was demolished
between 1860 and 1889 as Toxteth expanded. The bowling green
and attached farmlands were developed and became the tightly packed terraces now known as the Holy
Land. This alludes to the biblical names of the streets,
Moses, Isaac, Jacob and, David.

It
is ironic that in his writings the good Reverend was regretting the passing of Old Toxteth,
in 1889, when we are now also regretting the passing of our
Old Toxteth which is the one which followed his.
The name of
the pub survived and the present day Pineapple occupies a portion
of the old site
