The Mersey Forge - South Yard

29th January 2006

The Forge straddled either side of the south end of Grafton Street, separated by Sefton Street and Horsfall Street, it was spread over three sites in all. The different parts were connected by tunnels.

This view is of the South Yard, off Horsfall Street and taken from that street, looking towards the old gasometers shown on the map.

The original two gasometers look to have been replaced with this single one but Marky has visited in June 2006 and tells me that the other gasometer is still there but behind the wall...it rises up and down according to  the level of gas...when I visited it must have been empty

From this viewpoint, the order would be (looking straight ahead):

The large brown wall, then the rising tank, then the blue rigid tank shown here.

This yard is currently being developed and it now looks nothing like this picture.  A LARGE  tunnel underneath the yard has been excavated (this can be seen from Sefton street).  This tunnel was full of rubble for years.  A large portion of the yard (most of the right hand side of this picture) has been dug out for foundations. To the left of the yard I apparently missed what looks like a series of small casements  dug under Grafton Street.
