The progressive assimilation of Toxteth by Liverpool, in 1835 and 1895 meant that some street names were duplicated.  In most cases the older names were retained, but not always. Street directories and early census returns may list your ancestors under the old street names. Old names are are listed in grey. To avoid misunderstanding can I point out that both old and new names, both, always, refer to streets ONLY IN TOXTETH not those in Liverpool itself. Although I thought this list to have been complete in June 2005, newly obtained documents (March 2006) show many more changes than first imagined. This page has been given a drastic overhaul. It may still not be complete but it is largely so - apart from errors and mistakes which I am always happy to be told about. Last updated 02 March 2006

*On 1805 map, Bolton Street ran between St James Place and Grafton Street, parallel to Parliament and Stanhope Streets, it was intersected by Bedford Street. On the c.1830 map the end nearest Grafton St. is written as Botton St - that could be a misprint. The top end is Ashton Street (with an un-named back street to the north). On my post-WW1 map the lower half has become Britton St, and the upper half Ashwell St. and that's how they are marked on a modern A-Z. *  Windsor Street now ends at North Hill Street and its apparent continuation is Admiral Street, although the angle of the road changes at the junction.  It appears from the 1860 Gore that the entire street may have been called Rodney Street past this junction.
