Adjacent to the South End Mills which are a few hundred yards to the right of this shot and St Gabriel's church which forms the left hand edge of the picture. Note the iron plates in the end wall of the terrace, these are attached to metal rods which penetrate the buildings. The rods were heated and allowed to expand, when hot, the plates were screwed on and tightened. As the rods cooled they contracted, pulling in the brickwork and preventing it from bulging outwards. |
