This is the entrance to the Dingle Tunnel (part
of the overhead railway!)
The area below the tunnel is now a car park, however it was once the Herculaneum Dock. Prior to the Liverpool Garden Festival the open
dock was filled with dredged sand and used as a car park whilst it consolidated. Housing and leisure facilities were later built on the reclaimed land. The doorways in the background are part of the original dock and can usually be seen on older photographs. The housing above is the steeply sloping Shorefields area. Running from left to right is Grafton Street.
