The Grand Cinema  opened in July 1913. It was a purpose-built cinema and was said to be luxurious and comfortable. When it opened a piano was used for music, later a small orchestra fulfilled this same function.

Two years after it opened attempts were made to show pictures with synchronised speech using Edison's then new system.

The Grand was a leading cinema for several years but within 15 years it cut back, showing older films and closing some days.  By 1950 matinees were down to two days a week, in 1952 they ceased. On 27th September 1956 The Grand closed for good. The building was still standing in 1961.

(Built in 1913, this is not shown on 1905 map, the site is marked however.
