This shows a part of what was once
called 'Woodland Terrace' between Portman Road and Woodcroft Road. It sits on
part of the site of Woodside Farm, a property present on the 1850 OS map but
gone by 1905. The houses in this terrace are both older and of better substance
than the later surrounding terraces.
The part of this short terrace
closer to Portman Road was number 17 in 1881 when Charles Dyall
lived there, but the end shown was not then built, nor does it appear on the
1889 OS map. After this there is a re-numbering of Smithdown Road and the property with the green
painted stonework around the windows is number 127 in 1894 when Elizabeth Pixton lived there, (in 1881 she is Mrs George Pixton and living
at the other end of this little terrace, No3). By 1911 it was a Ladies
School, run by one Miss Mary Moore. Also resident was William Frederick
Rooke, a teacher of languages.
