A
view of the entrance looking along Smithdown Road
|
1906
This was situated on Smithdown Road and was then
a great innovation.
However see if this sounds familiar
given the 'new' trend towards recycling and power generation from
incinerators, also called pyrolisers - there is no difference.
Household
rubbish was collected and sorted. Any waste considered
combustible was burned to generate heat and thus steam, which was
used to power turbines and provide bothe electricity and hot
water.
The organic waste was often fed to pigs, ash
was dumped. A high chimney was used to disperse the smells,
smoke and hopefully the toxic materials contained in these.
