There was a volunteer corps belonging originally to the Mersey Forge and known as the Regimental VIII, or more popularly as Clay's Artillery.

Its original H.Q. was in some sheds at the bottom of Beresford Road. In 1859 this regiment became the 8th Lancashire Artillery Volunteers, (LAV).

By 1869 the Slater's directory shows that the HQ was in Sefton Street, at that time the Lieutenant Colonel was William Clay. It is presumed that this was the same Clay that gave it's original name. The Majors now were George Swainson and Charles Inman and Adjutant was L.K.Furlong.

The Sefton Barracks were built in
Windsor Street in 1871 as the new headquarters for the 8th LAV.

The alleyway (right) can be seen on the 1908 map
