The Mill on Park Road before the area was developed, St James church is in the background Park Road

Park Road is a long road.  Originally it was called Park Street and it began in the City Centre running to Dingle and beyond to the southern boundary of the park at Garston.  Later Park Street  was regarded as beginning at the junction of Parliament Street and Upper Parliament Street, which is the old entrance to the Ancient Park of Toxteth.  Later name changes and the construction of St James Church, meant that the section closest to Parliament Street came to be called St. James Place.   At the Hill Street / Upper Hill Street junction this changes to Park Place. According to the 1843 Gore, Park Place runs for 225 yards, before becoming Park Road proper, at the Warwick Street junction. As early as 1821 the name Park Road was certainly in use and Jeremiah Shaw was resident at 'The Old Mill, 1 Park Road'.  This is illustrated by Herdman as 'The Mill on Park Road' . The portion of Park Lane/Road from Dingle was re-christened to Aigburth Road in 1837 when Liverpool annexed a part of Toxteth.

At Warwick Street modern Park Road begins, running 225 yards to Northumberland Street then a further 225 yards to Park Street. This 225 yards is conveniently close to one eight of a mile and fits with the idea that this part of Toxteth was originally laid out in a grid pattern, seemingly of 1 furlong blocks. Park Road continues to the Dingle and ends at number 440 on the even side and number 377 on the odd side.  The Ancient Chapel follows 377 and occupies a substantial, but un-numbered section.

About the details below:
The numbering on different sides of Park Road is not regular and even-numbered properties are seldom opposite the corresponding odd-numbered properties. The difference varies along the length of the road.  The route below is from Park Place towards Dingle. Roads and Streets are named as they enter Park Road either on the right or the left sides.

The numbering shown either side of streets is extracted from trade directories and refers to the numbers either side of the road entering. Thus Pickwick Street, see just below, has number 15 Park Road on its town side and 17 Park Road on its Dingle side. Properties on Park Road are placed wherever they are numbered, the picture is on whichever side of Park Road it relates to - you will get the idea...... I am still working on this with lots more to be added, and then I will try and make the explanation clearer too!

Trade Directory entries fo Park Road are available in the Directories section of the site

The picture shows the junctions of Park Road with, Gelling Street (between the dark building and the closest pale building). Combermere Street (by the Globe - pale building at centre) is in the distance and Northumberland Street would be just out of camera on the left hand side about where this photograph must have been taken. The pub nearest camera (LHS) is the Farmer Arms at 62 & 64 Park Road

A view taken in 2004 from about the same spot.  The houses probably numbered 140 - 130 have gone, 'The Toxteth'  remains, although it is no longer a pub

The junction at the side of the pub(The Toxteth) is with Park Street, (LHS) and Upper Park Street (RHS).  128 Park Road is in the row of shops on the left hand side.  Also LHS are the railings around the church of St John the Baptist, between Park Street and Steble Street.

The same view in October 2004, the pub still stands, the properties beyond have long gone.  The post box, visible in the older photograph, remains but it has been re-sited and rotated (just off shot).  St. Johns no longer remains apart from a few stones on Park Road, a few more around the corner in Steble Street and a re-sited font.
