1955
This shows the Northumberland Street (Mill Street Housing. Compulsory Purchase
Order area and it was redeveloped some time between 1955 and
1965. It shows the South side of Northumberland Street, from Hughson
Street (off shot left of screen) to Mill Street. Note the
chemist on the corner of the photograph, this same shop is visible
on the adjacent
picture of Mill Street.
At the time of this photograph,
Sidney Levy Wood ran a dental practice in the right hand building,
No 68. Marky tells me that he moved to new premises housed in new
corporation flats (built around. 1960), at the junction of Lamport
Street and Northumberland Street. Mr Wood is recorded here from
1934 to 1962 but he is not in the 1966 Kelly for that year (data
gathered in 1965). The new dental surgery was demolished in
2004 . The rest of the buildings are assumed to number 70, 72
and 74. Most directories examined show no occupancy.
In 1926-1938 , No 70 was William Sandman, hairdresser, in 1926 Mrs
Anne Walsh, a licensed broker was next door. In that same year Robert
Davies, a boot repairer was at 74a – note that there is clearly
a boot and shoe repair business on the advertising in the 1955 photo.
