At the time of
the photograph these were newly opened balcony dwellings
in Northumberland Street.
Liverpool records office state that this picture
is
from the Medical Officer of Health's annual report. This is thought to
relate to the demolition of older slum houses which were replaced with these
new, dwellings, with proper water and sanitation.
These properties replace
those on the map - the maps used here date from 1905. However
they are now placed on the south side of Northumberland Street,
just beyond the junction with Mill Street. The two letters
on the left hand edge of the shot are on the side of the Two Lions public house
which sat at the actual junction.
I
have been told that this block lasted until the late 1960s by which time they
were vandalised and uninhabitable.
