Mill Street

The name Mill Street comes from a windmill, which stood near to the junction shown, one of several in the area, which apparently became known locally as `Little Holland'.

This1952 view looks south down Mill Street at the Hill Street junction. The pub on the left is now The Dick Jennings, (it looks wrecked in 1952 but it still stands, just, in 2007). In the 1911 Gore it is called The Grapes and is at 55 Mill Street. Behind it are the blocks of flats called 'King Gardens', These replaced earlier housing but are themselves now gone.

On the right-hand side, by the bus stop, you can just see the edge of another pub, 'The Weathercock', listed in Gores 1938 as 117 Hill Street (on the junction with Mill St.).
