Upper Mann Street & rear of Grafton Street,

The photograph is of the rear of Grafton Street (LHS) and Upper Mann Street (RHS), which are the two rows of houses. The houses are 3 storey, each with a yard and outside toilet. The entire area consists of closely packed properties in poor condition.

The area in the photograph can be pinpointed on the 1908 map of Toxteth by the long back yards on the Mann Street properties, the short yards on the Grafton Street side, then the elongated yard at right angles and finally no yard where the gable end of the houses abutts onto the alleyway.

On the left in the background there is a large building  now known to be the The Royal Southern Hospital

On the right the large building and chimney are associated with the cooperage, bottling stores and Mersey Brewery buildings around Hill Street - now the Cains Brewery.
