Essex Street began at Northumberland
Street and ran to Park Street at which point
its name changed to Upper Essex Street and it continued its course to terminate
at Harlow Street.
Essex Street was
a street of unrelieved, close-packed terraces. To an extent these continued
in the upper stretch but in the portion situated behind Steble
Street baths the houses were a little large, some had tiny front gardens
and the terraces were broken up more by cross streets and the prescence of a
building containing both the Fire Engine Service
and a local Bridewell.
