Dingle Station

This was the southerly terminus of the Liverpool Overhead Railway (LOR). It was built in 1896 and closed in 1956. The site was abandoned after the closure in 1956 and sold to an engineering firm. The site has been occupied by a garage but currently looks to be closed.  The LOR opened in 1893 and ran from the Alexandra Dock to the Herculaneum dock.  Three years later an extension from Herculaneum Docks to Dingle was opened, via a tunnel dug through the sandstone.  A this time Dingle was the largest underground railway station in Great-Britain. A fire in 1901, with the destruction of the station, meant that, until 1903 the terminus reverted to Herculaneum. By 1956 the station closed forever and the LOR was dismantled.
