Byles Street - No2 Court

This narrow alley is the entrance to No2 Court, Byles Street. The court broadens towards the end where washing hangs on a line across. Tiny, cramped, back-to-back houses faced into the court. A ditch runs down to a drain, which has something running down it.

Gores for 1938 shows Courts 1,3 and 5 on the left hand side of Byles Street.
Number 2 is thus assumed to be on the right hand side. All courts are before the junction with Miles Street.


Byles Street is a very old part of Toxteth. It was originally called Whitfield Street and, as this advert from Liverpool Mercury December 20th 1811 shows, it was laid out around 1812 or onwards. (courtesy Caryl Williams)
