Byles Street

This narrow alley is the entrance
to No2 Court, Byles Street. The court broadens towards the end where washing hangs on a line across. Tiny,
cramped, back-to-back houses faced into the court. A ditch
runs down to a drain, which has something running down it.
Gores for 1938 shows Courts 1,3 and 5 on the left hand side of Byles Street. Number 2 is thus assumed to be on the right hand side.
All courts are before the junction with Miles Street.
 Byles Street is
a very old part of Toxteth. It was originally called Whitfield Street and, as
this advert from Liverpool Mercury December 20th 1811 shows, it was laid out around 1812
