Wesleyan Methodist Hall (1881 and 1894) and known as Templar Hall
(1911, 1926) ,
1882-1931
Open-air preaching in the alleys
off Mill Street led to the formation of several classes in the early
1880s. In 1883 the old Cambridge Music Hall (Brunswick Music Hall in 1858 and
1860 but then numbered 81) was taken to accommodate
these. This building at No 79, Warwick Street
held 700 and a large congregation of working people enjoyed here a whole
round of social and religious activities.
A new church, now known as
Templar Hall, was opened in 1915 (but is listed under this name in Gore
of 1911). This building held 550, cost £1,000
and was the gift of Mr. J. Dempster of Birkenhead.
In 1925 it was
reconstructed at a cost of £1,592 to hold another 175 persons. It was
closed in 1931, a victim of the Great Depression, and the congregation
removed to the Wesleyan Methodist
Chapel in Stanhope Street. (LRO).
It is not found in Gore after this (1934,36,38 cjecked) |
