The church began life as The Old Chapel on South Hill Road in 1833. The money to build it was gifted to the local people by an unknown gentleman.  They had come to his aid when he was attacked by robbers whilst walking on Aigburth Road. The funding of the church was his appreciation.

James Picton records that it was 'nothing distinctive' whereas the Evangelical Magazine regards it as 'most neatly and elegantly built'

Griffiths records that "the first minister was Rev. J. J. Carruthers. In the little burial ground of this old building there are about a dozen graves, dating from 1840 to 1866. They are all cut in the solid rock".

At one stage the church had a mission in Beresford Road which eventually passed to St Cleopas Church and became their Church hall, then their mission and eventually their second church, before the present church (the third) was built in 2005.

The chapel in south hill road became a Sunday school when the congregation moved to the new church. It is still shown as a Sunday school on map 5d.
