The foundation stone of St. Paul's was laid on 9th September 1846 by the Rev. Hugh Mc'Neile (1). It was consecrated by the Archbishop of Canterbury elect, the Most Rev. Dr. J. B.Sumner on 02/03/1848. (2).

The design, said to be 'Perpendicular Gothic', was by Arthur Hill Holme, after an earlier design by Harvey Elmes was rejected. Although I have said that it was paid for by George Horsfall (whose family provided several Liverpool churches) that information is incorrect and refers instead to St. Pauls, in St. Paul's Square. I leave the mention here to spare others the same mistake.
