Not within toxteth but on the maps
In 1816 the
foundation stone of St Michael's church, Upper Pitt Street was laid June 21.
The building was started by the parish, but after having spent a reported £35,000
on the church they ran out of resources and the City Council stepped in
to finish the church which was consecrated on July 21 1826. The design,
with a tower fractionally over 200 feet high, mimicked that of St-Martins-in-the-Field,
in London.
The churchyard was closed to new burials in 1902 and the church,
which was damaged by enemy action during WWII, was demolished in 1946.
A
new church now stands on the old site. It is located at the rear of the building
in this shot. A modern photograph, taken looking behind where the clump of
trees can be seen (left hand side) shows that the old surrounding wall
is still intact.
