Gores Directory records that the foundation stone of this church was laid on March 21st 1848 by the Right Honourable the Earl of Sefton. The church of St. Matthew, Hill Street, was opened for worship on 7th October 1849 (see 'Liverpool Mercury', 5th and 9th October 1849), although the first entry in the register is not until 5th Jan 1851.

Gore's directory for 1860 shows it located between 77 and 79 Hill Street and about half way between Bedford Street (which is called Beaufort Street now) and Mill Street, thus locating it on the map.

The church was closed in 1931; an entry in the Register of Services states, 'The Rev. Geo. Hayward brought his ministry to a close and the church of St. Matthew, Toxteth, ceased to exist as a parish church on Sunday 26 July 1931'.

A note in the marriage register, states that the parishes of St. Matthew and St. James were to be united into one parish of St. James with St. Matthew (see also 'Liverpool Daily Post and Mercury', 12th November 1928).
