Gores Directory records that the foundation stone of this church was laid on March 21st 1848 by the Right Honourable the Earl of Sefton. The church of St. Matthew, Hill Street, was opened for worship on 7th October 1849 (see 'Liverpool Mercury', 5th and 9th October 1849), although the first entry in the register is not until 5th Jan 1851. Gore's directory for 1860 shows it located between 77 and 79 Hill Street and about half way between Bedford Street (which is called Beaufort Street now) and Mill Street, thus locating it on the map. |
