March 2005
There are few buildings left in Beaufort Street now, the extensive Church, Social Club,
School and Vicarage of St Malachy is one of them.
St Malachy Church was designed
by C. Walker and opened in 1904, amongst a
vastly crowded area of court dwellings - 2 blocks of courts (containing
20 houses) plus five houses in Beaufort Street had to be demolished for
the church alone.
Prior to construction the congregation had worshipped
in an earlier chapel (Our Lady of Dolours) in Upper Mann Street.
The Catholic Directory said that St Malachy's congregation was formed in 1900
and this presumably refers to this older building.
The school (the
furthest section) was added sometime between 1905 and 1909. This is just on the city side of Beaufort Street School and St Gabriels.
