Gore for 1894 states that this Roman Catholic Church was an Iron building erected in 1892 to seat 450 people. This temporary iron church opened in Sept 1892. St Charles RC School then opened in 1896.

The present church, designed by architects Sinnott, Sinnott & Powell. was built on the site of the iron church and opened on 27 May 1900.

The building is still in use and sits adjacent to the site of the now demolished St. Augustine's home.
