This brick built Catholic church was opened in 1884.

The sandstone dressings are now sooty and blackened, a legacy of over a century of coal fires in the surrounding terraces, although these no longer exist.

The church sits almost alone in an area of grassed-over, brownfield sites, dereliction and sporadic new housing.
