This was erected, at a cost of £28,000, by Howard Douglas Horsfall,
in
memory of his father Robert Horsfall. Work began in 1883 after
designs by J. L. Pearson who was by then at the peak of his career,
having not long completed Truro Cathedral.
The church was opened in 1885 being consecrated by Lord
Bishop of Liverpool on January 21st.
The church has a red brick exterior
but, remarkably, this complex and fascinating building has a pale
Caen stone and marble interior with Nathaniel Hitch reredos and stained glass by Kempe.
As the parish expanded late
in the 19thC so this church spawned a chapel of ease (St
Pancras) in Lidderdale Road. This was also paid for by Mr. Horsfall. With a reversal of
fortunes St Pancras was re-absorbed in 1937 and eventually demolished whilst
St Agnes still stands on Ullet Road. WEBSITE
