I
have no good picture but the original church is just visible on the right hand side of this
old postcard view
|
This sat between Beaconsfield Street and
Arundel Street at the junction of Princes Road.
The history
of the church began with congregations from two small chapels in
Walnut Street and Prince William Street who combined to worship
at the Seamen’s' Chapel on Rathbone Street. Later they planned
and inaugurated the Princes Road Methodist church.
The foundations
stone was laid in 1877 but lack of money meant that the church did
not open until 1885.
In 1964 the congregation again amalgamated,
this time with that of the Lodge Lane Methodist church and together
they built a new church on the old site, most famous for the appalling
'crucifixion' sculpture which adorns it.
