According to T. Burke 'Catholic History of Liverpool', 1970, p.162 "St. Patrick's parish had become so extensive and populous that a school-chapel, dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, was built and opened in November 1866". However entries in both the Liber Baptizatorum and the Liber Defunctorum commence on 15 October 1865 (see below). Our Lady of Mount Carmel first appears in the 'Liverpool Directory' of 1867 when the address is given as "Chipping Street, Toxteth Park", and it is not until 1880 that it is listed in High Park Street. Burke however, states that a public meeting was held on 12 December 1875 to consider ways and means of providing "a new church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel to replace the school chapel ... The new church of Mount Carmel was completed in the summer of 1878 and opened by the Bishop on 21 July".

The school premises continued to be used as a school until December 1960 when part of the premises was destroyed by fire.  The church records were deposited in Liverpool Record Office by Father Murray in May 1975. The later registers are still at the church.
