Hartington Road Congregational - Hartington Rd

circa 1970

The original church stood on an island of land between Hartington Road and Lesseps Road before its demolition. There was a Sunday School attached and this is marked behind the church, on the map. This, was opened in 1885 and later enlarged (1897).

The church was still extant on the 1905 map but by the 1953 map the original church is a ruin, with the building next door (the former Sunday School) being used as the church.
The photograph here is actually of the Sunday School, the original church has been demolished already. It would have been in the foreground, behind the railings. This is why I earlier thought that the church did not have a tower or steeple! In fact there was a steeple on the church and this is just visible in the distance on an old Hartington Road view.
