Family tradition says that WHT came from Birmingham, was something to do with the Steel trade and that he arrived in Welshpool with enough money to be regarded as 'of independent means' and later as a 'landowner'.  A further family story is that he married a rich woman before coming to Welshpool. He was a local councillor in Welshpool and is attributed with building some houses, including a row of cottages and 'The Four Elms', the family home on Salop Road (now demolished).

1841 He was born on 12th August 1841 at 7 Court, Lower Hurst Street, in the district of St. Martin, Birmingham which was then Warwickshire. This year is consistent in all of the records traced or attributed to him. His father is given simply as William Taylor on the birth certificate, a Cabinet maker, his mother is Elizabeth Taylor formerly Wiseman. The marriage of William Taylor and Elizabeth Wiseman took place in the West Bromwich district on June 12th 1838 (West Bromwich 18 675).

1848 A brother Charles Frederick Taylor was born.  As WHT would be only 7 he is assumed to be with the family, giving an address for him of 107 Cheapside, (Deritend & Bordesely) Aston, Birmingham.

1851 The Warwickshire census shows only two records where a William Taylor is head of house with a wife called Elizabeth and a son William.  The first is a waggoner and the William is aged 10.  The second, mine, the son is actually William H Taylor as he should be, and he is 9 as he should be.  Also his father is William who is a Cabinet Maker, as he should be from the marriage certificates (both his own and eventually of WHT). Note that his father, William Taylor is a master Cabinet maker, employing 4 men and one boy.  Note also that WHT has at least one brother and one sister.

1861 There are no William Henry, nor William H Taylors in the census, there are 30 William Taylors, born in Warwickshire 1841 +/- 2 years. The only person to fit is William Taylor, a lodger in the household of Thomas and Sarah Green and their family. This is at 213 Moseley Street, Aston. He is unmarried, aged 20 and a Pen Tool Maker. There is also a 'Green connection' later discovered. This would appear to be my man in the absence of other candidates and the reasonable fit of area, age, trade and birthplace. It might also be noted that WHT was also in Moseley Road (at 141) in the 1851 census.

Pugh, marriage 1
1865 William Henry Taylor married Eliza Pugh. The marriage was by Banns, in the church of St. Peter and St. Paul in the parish of Aston. This is the parish church of Aston: Genuki gives it as being in Aston-juxta-Birminghma, Aston. WEBSITE (the church is on Aston Hall Road / Witton Lane in Aston)
William Henry Taylor is  aged 24, a batchelor, Steel Pen Maker. His father is William Henry Taylor a Cabinet Maker. Eliza Pugh is aged 22, spinster, no trade given. Her father is John Pugh, a Die Sinker. Both parties give their address simply as 'Aston Manor'. Both parties could sign their own names. Witnesses were Alfred Edwards and Mary Ann Edwards.

The marriage resulted in at least two children Elizabeth and Harry W., both of whom are with WHT in the 1881 census. Some time after Harry's birth Eliza died. (WHT is a widower in the 1871 census but remarried in December of 1871).

1871 census shows William at 93 Spring Row in the parish of Handsworth, St Michaels.  William is living as a lodger in the household of Thomas Pugh, 66, tool maker, born Warwick, Birmingham. Thomas is married to Hanah 68, with their child Mary Ann Pugh, 26. It is assumed that this is the brother of John Pugh who was the father of Eliza Pugh, WHT's first wife.  Also there is George Evans shown as nephew (to Thomas).

William H Taylor is a lodger, widower, 29, tool maker, born Warwick, Birmingham. William Henry has with him two children Anna (sic) 5, scholar, born Handsworth, Stafford and Henry W 3, born Stafford, Handsworth.  As the form is filled in they are shown as daughter and son to William Henry and niece and nephew to Thomas Pugh (who is also a toolmaker). This is probably John Pugh's brother however the Pugh connection and children would seem to confirm that it is this William Henry who married Eliza Pugh in 1865 as shown above.

Parker, marriage 2
1871 On 3 December 1871, William Henry Taylor (steel pen tool maker) aged 30 a widower living at Birchfield Road, son of William (cabinet maker) married Elizabeth Parker, aged 24, spinster, Franchise Street, daughter of William (Gardener). The marriage was at St John's Parish Church in Perry Barr (This is Handsworth and within West Bromwich registration district). Based on the ages of the children subsequently found it is postulated that the first marriage would have lasted from approx 1861-1869.  There are not thought to be any children known from the Parker marriage, as only two are with WHT in the 1881 census and these are from his earlier marriage to Eliuzabeth Pugh. There is a death of Elizabeth Taylor aged 33 in Dec qtr 1879 Aston which has yet to be followed up.

1881 In the LDS census shows William D. Taylor is at 18 Barker Street, Aston, Birmingham, a steel pen toolmaker. He is a widower, aged 39 (my WHT was born 12th August 1841 and so would be 39) .  This WHT has with him a daughter Ellzzie, 14, (b.1867) [Elizabeth Ann ?] also a son called Hary W, 12.(b.1869)  Given the suspect spellings of both children's names I have now checked original and the LDS transcription is inaccurate, perhaps as a result of handwriting. If the original page is examined, the 'D' of Daughter is different to the supposed 'D' of William D Taylor, and is in fact an 'H'. The ages of the children are such that they are almost certainly not children of the marriage to Elizabeth Parker, which was 03/12/1871 to 1879.

Davies (nee Jones), marriage 3
1881 WHT's third marriage was to Mary Davies. This took place at the parish church of Perry Barr, Staffordshire - this is probably St John's. WHT is 40 (corrrect age),  a widower of Perry Barr (no further address), he is again a steel pen toolmaker. His father is Henry William Taylor, a Cabinet Maker. This reversal of his father's forenames is considered an error, it will be checked using original documents and not the transcribed GRO copies which have been wrong in other cases also. Mary Davies is aged 46, a widow of Perry Barr. Her father is Thomas Jones, a builder. Jones is thus assumed to be her maiden name. Both parties signed their own names. Witnesses were Charles ?Weidebank? and Lucy Matilda Judd. There is just one Lucy Judd in the 1881 census for Staffordshire, living in Perry Village, Handsworth, Staffs. The house is right next to St John's Church (previous sheet). Transcipt | Original. No trace of Charles ?Weidebank? or similar can be found for Staffordshire or Warwickshire.

For the 1881 census there is one Mary Davies (same Davies spelling, at 254 Hagley Road, Edgebaston, Birmingham. She is a domestic servant, age 49, she is born in Welshpool. Her married status is not given. She is working for Charles ?Duchinias?Duchenins? -  a professor of music. The name is not easily read but could perhaps be compared to the witness on the marriage certificate above. LINK.
(There is a Mary Davies for Staffordshire, however she is already married in 1881).
(Using the exact spelling there is only one other Mary Davies born 1835 +/- 5 years in the whole of the UK for 1881, she is in Warrington. LINK) These are not thought to be mine.

1891 William H. Taylor is living at 156 Villa Street, Aston, aged 49 (exactly right age) a steel pen toolmaker, born Birmingham.  He is now with his third wife, Mary, aged 55, who has no occupation. Mary was born in Welshpool, Montgomeryshire.  This finally makes the connection back to Welshpool and it is thought that the couple moved to live there after 1891. The Four Elms (WHT's eventual house in Welshpool) was not recorded in the 1891 census, WHT is thought to have constructed it and was certainly living there by 1901. It is thought that he lived at  the Four Elms, with Mary, before being widowed and remarrying, for the fourth time, to  Sarah Kate Pryce in 1901.  Mary is said to be buried at Welshpool.

Pryce, marriage 4
1901 WHT is again a widower in 1901 (census and marriage certificate).  He is living at Four Elms Welshpool. BDC recalls a picture of a girl in a cap and gown (in a drawer at Four Elms), and a graduate daughter by an earlier marriage is suggested, perhaps this was Elizabeth. It is thought that one wife is buried in the Church of Wales, Welshpool and she is supposed to have a headstone there. This is quite likely bearing in mind the 1891 and 1901 census results,.

1901 William Henry Taylor married his forth wife, Sarah Kate Pryce (aged 21), a spinster on 21st Jan 1901. The marriage was at Forden Register office. He is aged 59 on his marriage, a widower, occupation given as landowner. His father is named as William Henry Taylor and is deceased in 1901, a Cabinet maker. This is the only time that 'Henry'  appears as a middle name for his father William Taylor 1817, this is not recorded on his birth certificate.  Witnesses were Eric Thomas and Alfred Houlstone Wallett. The address of both bride and groom is Four Elms, Salop Road, Welshpool.

witnesses :-Looking back to 1881 only 1 Alfred Wallet is traced, aged 9, born Wellington, Shropshire, living with parents William and Louisa at Church Road, Dawley, Shropshire.
In 1891 again only one Alfred Wallett is traced in the census and he is living Welshpool (born Shropshire), aged 19, a printer.
In 1901 census  Alfred Wallett a 29 year old Compositor is a lodger at Aqueduct Cottage, Welshpool, (born Shropshire). This is surely the witness.
Eric Thomas has been found in Welshpool in 1901, he is also a printer, aged 20, born Montgomeryshire. He is the Verger's son, living at home with his parents. His father John Thomas is the Verger. (notes from BDC Church Bank is on Salop Road, Erwwen (spelling?) on RHS Blockleys butchers, on LHS is a little museum - that is Church Bank, next to big church where Nana (Sarah Kate Pryce) is buried on RHS going in to Welshpool, Strawfields shop).

1921 on the 27th May, WHT collapsed and died whilst walking home from Welshpool, along the canal bank, carrying a joint of ham. CFT later recalled that the family were made to eat the ham, rather than waste it. His occupation is given as Steel Pen Toolmaker (retired). The informant is H. W Taylor, son, Homestead, Digby Road, Sutton Coldfield. (see 1881 census above). This is presumably Harry and points back to the earlier marriage in Birmingham. This earlier family has not been traced further.
