1827 (approx) The birth of Sarah was in Harrington,Cumberland. The birth is not traced and is almost certainly pre-records. She may have been born as late as 1829 however the earlier census data is taken as being more accurate given the propensity of my middle-aged female relatives to lower their ages in later census records.

1841 census, the family are now traced (indexed as McGray) to Hollins or Hollings, High Harrington, Cumberland. District 10 which comproses 'all that part of the parish of Harrington called the village of Higher Harrington together with the two houses called the Scaw'. HO 107/156/18. The exact location is not found, the entry is after 'Grayton Green' (?) but before the entry for 'Wiggington' (?) and what looks like 'Sticky Hil'l. Next entry is then 'Rectory'.

1841
James McGravy, blacksmith 45, (b. 1796) Ireland
Elizabeth McGravy, 45, (b. 1796) Cumberland
Catherine McGravy, 14 (b. 1827) Cumberland.
Sarah McGravy, 14 (b. 1827) Cumberland.
Peter McGravy, 12 (b. 1829) Cumberland.
James McGravy, 7 (b. 1834) Cumberland.
Thomas McGravy, 4 (b. 1837) Cumberland.

1847 The marriage of Sarah McGrievey (age full, spinster, Northumberland Street) to Henry Fitzgerald (age full, bachelor, mariner, Northumberland Street) on February 12th 1847 (W. Derby Mar. qtr, 1847 XX, 702) at the church of Church of St. James in Toxteth (then shown as the parish of Walton on the Hill) img1.gif. Witnesses are Joseph O'Hare and Catherine McGrievey (Sarah's sister - who became Catherine Tyson on marriage). Sarah's father is shown as James McGrievey, blacksmith on the certificate, suggesting that the 1851 census (see following entry) has the wrong name 'John' entered for father / head-of-house (nb, Sarah's brother James, b. 1834 also gives his father as 'James' on his own marriage certificate).

1851 Finds the family at 30 Hill Street in Toxteth Park in the census for that year. The family is apparently led by JOHN McGreevey (more of the name 'John' shortly). he is a journeyman, Ship Smith, born Ireland, Killaleagh, (Killyleagh) married and aged 57 (b. 1794). He is married to Elizabeth, 56, b. Cumberland, Workington. Shown as their children are
  James, son,unmarried, 17, (b. 1834)  blacksmith apprentice, b. Harrington, Cumberland.
   Thomas, son, unmarried,15 (b. 1836), sailmaker, b. Harrington, Cumberland.
Catherine Tyson, daughter, married, 23 (b. 1828) b. Harrington, Cumberland.
Henry Fitzgerald, 28, (b. 1823), Ireland, Cork, Master Mariner, Son-in-law. Henry's wife is

Sarah Fitzgerald, 28, (b. 1823), Harrington, Cumberland, daughter-in-law (to head of house John,  there is an alteration in the
ennumerator's book. This is not correct, she is daughter. Henry has also been altered, to son-in-law
   which is correct.

Despite several searches of census data Sarah or Henry seemed to vanish after this. However the deaths of Sarah's parents James and Elizabeth McGrevy have provided evidence to trace them after the relocation of the family to Kirkdale and Everton in North Liverpool between 1851 above and 1861 below.

1857 Sarah Fitzgerald married George Jared at St Patrick's, Park Place (June 1857, W.Derby 8b 707 (1).  Confirmation that this is the correct Sarah comes from some years later when a death of Elizabeth McGreevy, undoubtedly Sarah's mother, occurred in Liverpool on 25th March 1873. (Liverpool, Mar, 1873, 8b 50). Elizabeth died at 84 Bostock Street aged 75 years, wife of James McGreevy, Shipsmith.  Bostock Street is next to Kew Street where James and Elizabeth McGreevy are found in the1871 census (and where James died later in 1871). The couple's daughter and informant, Sarah's sister Catherine, lived in Kew Street also.  Elizabeth's death was advised by Sarah Jared also of 84 Bostock Street. This Sarah Jared is in fact Sarah nee McGrevy, who married to become Sarah Fitzgerald and then seemingly vanished. Henry Fitzgerald must have died some time after 1851 but before Sarah re-marries in 1857. The only death found in this period seems to be Henry Fitzgerald, Dec 1856, Liverpool, 8b 62.

1860 On April 1st at 9 Everton Crescent, John Matthew Jared is born to George Jared, teacher and Sarah Jared (late Fitzgerald formerly McGreivy).[spellings verbatim]. 9 Everton Crescent is the address of the Boy's Orphan House (Catholic) mentioned in the census the following year. The birth of John Matthew Jared, was W. Derby 8b, 314, June 1860 and the certificate confirms him as the child of the couple.

1861 George Jared (3), 42, (1819), Liverpool, is Governor at the Boy's Orphan House (Catholic) on Everton Brow. Sarah Jared, wife, 33 (b. 1828) Harrington, Cumberland is Matron. The couple have two children Elizabeth 14, (b.1847) Lancashire, Kirby and John, 1, (1860) Lancashire, Everton. As George and Sarah were only married in 1857, Elizabeth is assumed to be George's daughter by an earlier marriage, John is George and Sarah's child.

The census entry for the home (RG 9/2710) runs to four pages.
. Significant (second icon of the four) is Mathew Tyson, 10, b. Liverpool, in the home as Sarah's sister Catherine has a son Mathew Tyson (same spelling) b. 1852, Liverpool. who is otherwise missing from the 1861 census and is not with his parents.

1871 Yet again no trace of Sarah Jared is found. However at 74 Bostock Street (see 1857 above) there is a Sarah O'Brian, married aged 42 (b. 1829) born Harrington, Cumberland a dressmaker. She is married to Michael O'Brian (2), 52, (b. 1819) a bacon curer, born Ireland. With them is Thomas O'Brian, son, 18, unmarried, born New York USA, a miller and John M. Jared, son, 11 (b. 1850), Liverpool, Lancs. scholar, the 11 year old John is Sarah's son by George Jared.

It would seem that Sarah was widowed yet again and the death of George Jared may be one in Jun
1869, Liverpool 8b 29 aged 49 (b. 1820). This fits exactly on age and is at about the correct time. Sarah Jared married Michael O'Brien in 1871. Liverpool Mar 1871, 8b 325.

1880 Sarah O'Brien is living at 32 Foley Street, Kirkdale when she is the infoirmant on her sister, Catherine Tyson's, death certificate.

1881 Sarah O'Brien is at 32a Foley Street, Kirkdale, she is aged 52, a dressmaker, born Harrington. Married to Michael O'Brien, 60, (b.1821), Ireland, butcher. There are no children with them. In the house is a lodger Peter Foreshaw, 44, marr. b. Ormskirk, labourer.

1890 a possible death of Sarah O'Brien is in Mar. 1890, West Derby, 8b 443. This Sarah is 63 (b. 1827). A second death, more likely correct is Sept 1893, Liverpool, 8b 54, aged 70 (b.1823)  This Sarah is a better fit on age.

1891 neither Sarah nor Michael have been found (yet) in the census index which might argue in favour of the 1890 death above rather than the 1893!

 1. this is wrongly transcribed on FreeBMD as 77, there being an inkblot on the zero in George's entry, but on Sarah's entry, without the inkblot, it is clearly 707

2. In 1861, a likely Michael O'Brien is at 74 Lime Kiln Lane, Scotland Ward, he is a butcher, 40 (b.1820), Ireland. His wife is Catherine, 32, no trade, b. Ireland. The name and age is a match but what makes this person compelling is his relatives: - Teresa Dunne, niece,7, scholar b. New York. Mary O'Brien, daughter, 4, scholar, b. New York. Eliza O'Brien, daug,1, b. Ireland. Ten years later, in 1871, Michael has an 18 year old son with him who was also born in New York. (see Irish famine page for possible reasons for emmigration then immigration

3. George has not been investigated further as yet but it is worth noting that in the 1851 census a George, with this unusual surname of Jared, is found at 49 Combermere Street in Toxteth. This George is a policeman, 34 (b. 1817) with his wife Elizabeth 23, (b. 1828) and was in Combermere Street at a time that Sarah's brother James McGrevy would be living in the next street - Gelling Street in Toxteth with his father-in-law, Michael Hayden, also a policeman. There is scope for the Jareds and the McGrevys to know each other. (caution may be needed however as there are other George Jareds such as one aged 60 (1851 census) b. 1791, a cordwainer, at 30 Brick Street, in lodgings with his daughter Naomi, 26, stay maker. The Brick Street address, at the corner of Simpson Street, is also close to McGrevys in Jordan Street. This George was born Oswestry however. In 1861 another George Jared aged 79 (b. 1782) is in Great Blundell Street, Liverpool, St Michael (close to Pitt St) he is a boat builder and the McGrevys were shipwrights living nearby!
