1810 Michael was born in Ireland. This year is based on various
census data. His death certificate age would give 1805 but is notably different
from data supplied during his life.
1831 Ellen and Michael's only known child is Mary.
Census data places Mary's birth between 1832 and 1835, before statutory
records.
No other children were known however Bernard Cullen, researcher
at St. Georges Catholic Cathedral in Southwark has found another baptism relating
to Michael & Ellen. This is that of a son, "
Michael - born 06/09/1831, baptised 25/09/1831. Michael Headen, son of
Michael & Helen Headen (nee Foley) Sponsors James Sweney & Helen Flinn.
Rev Thomas Doyle. Ref: 567 - 1831 (All spellings are as in the ledger)". The
further fate of this Michael is unknown but this shows that there is time in the
gaps between records for a child, especially a male child, to
have grown up and left home by the time that I next have family
data in 1851. 1851 In the census The Heydens are at 11 Belle Street (in
court housing perhaps?) in the Scotland Ward of N. Liverpool. This is not precisely located but is off Cazeneau Street (Gore 1843) in the Horatio Street area (Liverpool Libraries). (Checking
this street, the 1858 directory shows only No1 (beer seller), 2 Bell Inn, there
are properties at 10 and 18, but no more) . Michael Heyden is head, Married, 41, Police Officer, Ireland. Their daughter Mary, 19,
is living with them. This age would place the marriage of Michael and Ellen no later than 1832 and thus
it is probably before statutory records. The 1829 marriage above looks to be correct.
Also present are Patrick Walsh, Visitor, Unmarried, 28, Police Officer, Ireland,
and John Kelly, Nephew, 9, Scholar, Surrey Bermondsey. (Bermondsey
is apparently Southwark!) The
Police officer is assumed to be a lodger, however John Kelly as
a nephew (presumably to Michael) aged 9 and born in Bermondsey,
may give a clue to a possible sister to Michael or Ellen (who is
now thought to have at least two siblings). 1858 Michael
has moved to S. Liverpool and is living around Jordan Street. His daughter, Mary, gives 6 Jordan Street as her address when she marries James McGrievy (of
21 Jordan Street) at St Barnabas Church on adjacent Flint St / Parliament St. No6 is part of a block recorded as "4,6,8,10 - Storey Sandford Joseph, merchant, ironfounder and hollow ware" in the 1858 P.O. directory, however Peter O'Niell, Baker, is living at No8 so there was occupancy
in the premises. Michael is a policeman, so of significance is Jordan Street Bridewell at No14 Jordan St (keeper is David Wilson)
which is presumably connected to Michael Hayden (it is this spelling now).
This was also called the South End Bridewell.
In later directories however this Bridewell appears to be a Pinfold
(details under Jordan Street) although there is a Bridewell proper found (within
toxteth) at 93 Upper Essex Street in what would be 'C' division (Michael is
dead by 1894 however). Note that James McGrievy gives his address as 21 Jordan Street. 1861 census finds the Heyden family (togther
with my McGrevys) at 59 George Street (later to be called Gelling Street). Michael is a Police Constable born in Ireland and aged 53, an age consistent with the next
census. Ellen is a Bonnet Maker
which fits with the later family trade. The other children are consistent for ages, birthplaces etc. There is no new information, except for the presence of a grand daughter (to
Michael), Elizabeth aged 8 months. This cannot be my great grandmother Elizabeth McGrevy as she was not born until 1863 and her birth certificate is unequivocal. This is an earlier Elizabeth who died in infancy and the name has
been re-used for a later child. 1879 Michael died on 14th March 1879 of Pneumonia Asthma. His age is given as 74, he is shown as a retired Police Inspector. M. McGrevey, daughter is the informant. The address is 59 Gelling Street. Certificate is March 1879 W. Derby 8b 280. 1881 As would be expected Michael and Ellen are not in the census. Remarkably the rest of the family are still at the same address at 59 Gelling Street. Daughter Mary is now aged 44 born London, Middlesex, no occupation given.
