The research in this file is 'loose' as yet with much speculation but too many co-incidences for it to all be incorrect.

1852 Mathew was born around 1852 in Liverpool based on census data. The birth is not traced unless it is John Matthew Tyson, Liverpool 8b, 22 June 1852. (searched all 'Tyson' births on FreeBMD 1850-1854 for Liverpool and all Tyson births for whole country 1851-1852, 8 quarters).

1861 Mathew is not found with his parents but there is a Mathew Tyson aged 10 (b. 1852), scholar, b. Liverpool,  living with Catherine's sister, Sarah McGrevy (married as Sarah Jared) at the Boy's Orphan House (Catholic) on Everton Brow.  This Mathew is presumed to be correct and living with his aunt, near to his parents. n.b. his mother Catherine gave birth in March of 1861 and this may be a factor in Mathew not being at home on census day, 7th April.

1871 for the census Mathew is with his parents Robert Tyson and Catherine McGrevy (shown as Catrina here) at 13 Kew Street in Liverpool, aged 19. He is a unmarried, shipsmith, b. Liverpool.

1871 in Liverpool a family of Tysons with Harrington connections are in Edgeware Street (2nd page here)) however the census (RG 10/5255) shows a likely family, of 5 people, at 5 College Street, St. Bees, Whitehaven -

Peter Tyson, head, married, 43, Shipsmith, b. Wasdale Cumberland
Margaret, wife, m. 46, b. St Bees, Cumberland
Joseph, son, 16, plumber & gasfitter, Maryport, Cumberland
Isabella Cubin, sister in law, widow,40, dressmaker, St Bees, Cumberland
William H Cubin, nephew,4, scholar, Liverpool, Lancs

It looks as if Isabella Cubin is Margaret's sister who has lived in Liverpool, given birth to (at least) William H Cubin, become widowed and moved to St Bees to live with her sister's family. This is of interest as she seems to have married Mathew Tyson at Whitehaven later in 1871, if not Isabella herself then it may have been a daughter of the same name.

1871 a marriage of a Matthew Tyson (with 2 tt's) to Isabella Cubin at Whitehaven June 1871, 10b 947, may be my relatives. No other Isabella marriages or Mathew Tyson marriages are found between 1861 and 1881 (whole country freeBMD).

1881 A Mathew Tyson with Isabella is in Blackburn, is in Friday Street (without a  house number). This Mathew is aged 29 (b. 1852), shunter on railway, born Liverpool. Isabella is 36, cotton winder, b. Greenock, Scotland, (n.b. this place of birth differs from 1871 census).

(nb, in 1881 there is a family of Tysons in Church Road, Harrington, led by John Tyson but significantly he has a son named Mathew with this same, slightly unusual, spelling variant.  There are also a family of McGrevys living in Church Road, Harrington led by a James McGrevy. This James was born in Ireland but note that his daughter is noted as a British Subject, born in Melbourne, Australia. She is a dressmaker as were many of the Liverpool McGrevy's.

1891 The 1881 census data for Blackburn might not be of interest except that in the 1891 census the presumed same Mathew is at 10 Friday Street. He is a railway shunter, aged 42, (b. 1849) b. Liverpool, married to Isabella born Scotland, a cotton winder. With him is a nephew, John T Tyson, 12, cotton creeler born Bury and a Thomas Tyson brother, 34, a bone warehouse* labourer, born Liverpool. This Thomas fits the known brother of 'my'. Mathew, from the 1871 census in Liverpool.
(* There is a bone warehouse at No4 Friday Street, which also  appears to be the Royal Albert Warehouse (or bonehouse), thus bone china is suspected for Thomas's employ, rather than something more sinister). There do not appear to be any children with Mathew and Isabella.

James Coupe is a boarder with them and may fit into the loose family group, since at number 2 Friday Street, next door to the bone warehouse, is another Coupe and with him is another Tyson, Mary born Ireland.  There is also an unmarried Sarah Tyson 35, (b. 1856) b. Liverpool, charwoman, in Back Friday Street. This Sarah is living as a boarder with her son, another Mathew Tyson, aged 5 b. Blackburn.  The subject of this file, Mathew (1852) does have a sister called Sarah of about this age who was also born in Liverpool. This is presumed to be her.

In 1901 census there is a Mathew Tyson, now 46 (b. 1855) in Blackburn. Mathew is a railway shunt horse driver (c.f. 1891 above), born Liverpool, he is married to Bridget, 36, a cotton ????, born Blackburn, they are living at 5 Chadwick Street, Blackburn (RG13/ 3916). There is also a marriage Jun 1900, Blackburn, 8e, 855 Mathew Tyson, to one Bridget Duggan.  This would seem to be mine as only one other Mathew Tyson marriage is found between Mar 1891 and Dec 1901 but the bride there is not Bridget and the place is not Blackburn. There is only one case where there is a bride called Bridget and only one case where the marriage is in Blackburn, they are both this one.

The addresses, Chadwick and Back Friday Street, in Blackburn are both close to each other and to the railway line. Back Friday Street no longer exists ( web data gives dates of 1852-1947 for this and suggests that it is now in, or called, Grimshaw Park).

This is the last that is known of Mathew Tyson.
