There are two Sheridan families in Roxburgh in 1891, one of which has members born in Berwick. This needs tracing further). Mary McCulloch's mother, Catherine, was varyingly born in Scotland (1871), Berwickshire (1881) or Roxburgh (1891) according to census returns. This is nowhere near Glencoe and it may be that the story applies to an earlier generation or a relative. Various McCullochs are found in Liverpool, living close in some census, mostly born Scotland or Ireland, also some cohabitees born Edinburgh and these need checking. 1871 Mary (aged 5) is first found in Liverpool in 1871 at 23 Mann Street, with her parents and elder sister Sarah. 1875 assumed to be with parents at 2 Court, Cooper Street when Charles is born in March 1881 although the spelling of the surname has changed (census taker ?) the family are at 72 Henderson St, Toxteth, Liverpool. Mary is a scholar aged 13. 1885 Mary marries George Byrd, a rivetter aged 21 on 2 August 1885 at Liverpool Parish Church. Mary gives her age as 19 ( which appears to be correct). She is a spinster. Their address is Shannon Street, which is a small street close to Brownlow Hill in Liverpool near to the site of what is now the Catholic Cathedral. The witnesses are Francis James Temple and Catherine Watts. (In the 1881 census only one Francis Temple is to be found in Liverpool, he is living in Toxteth at 80 Henderson Street and is a rivetter, clearly he could be known to George and is living close to Mary. Catherine Watts cannot be traced). The marriage is short lived due to the death of George. They have one child, Martha Byrd, who is found with Mary in her second marriage, varyingly as a daughter or stepdaughter to Hugh Edwards. 1889 Mary marries Hugh Edwards. They give their address as 20 Wellington Terrace, Toxteth Park, Liverpool. (Liverpool Dec qtr 1889 8b 464). Witnesses are R.Harrison and M.Daley, not reliable data can be found to positively identify these witnesses. 1891 Mary and Hugh are at 27 Wolfe Street, 29 January 1891, both for the birth of Hugh (jnr.) and the census on April 5th. Mary is now 24. They already have a daughter, Jane Edwards, who would have been born around 1890. This is 'Auntie Ginnie' as she became known. 1901 10 Wolfe Street, Toxteth, Liverpool for the census, and they now have Jane(11), Hugh (10), Elizabeth(4) and Henry(2). John (born 1901) is not yet born. Martha Bird is with them aged 14, shown as a step-daughter to Hugh. 1905 they are still at 10 Wolfe Street, for the birth of Mary Edwards. Notes: |
