1834 Mary was born in Middlesex, London, all census data agrees on this, however this is expanded in some to show Surrey St. Saviour or Poplar. St Saviour Southwark is the area around Newington and Old Kent Road, London SE1 today. It may be noted that her mother Ellen, in the 1851 census, also claims Southwark (without St Saviour) as her own birthplace. London Metropolitan Archives have checked the following without finding Mary's baptism. Records checked for Headon/Headen/Heaton/Haddon
and Hayden. 1851 In the census Mary is found living with her parents Michael and Ellen in the Scotland ward of Liverpool. Mother Ellen is born in Southwark, London and Mary Heyden is shown as born Surrey St.Saviour Borough Liverpool Ward, Parish or Township Scotland Ecclesiastical Parish – Piece No & Part 2176/1 Folio 0066 Registration District 461/1. 1858 The marriage of James McGrevy and Mary Hayden has recently been found in 1858 in Liverpool. For a long time this proved untraceable, however James is wrongly recorded in the National Index as John for this marriage, (March 1858, Liverpool 8b 95). The Lancashire records correctly show James McGrievy (another spelling!) marrying Mary Hayden in Liverpool. The marriage took place at Liverpool, St. Barnabas, Parliament Street, on February 3rd 1858. James is aged 23 and a batchelor, shipwright, living at 21 Jordan Street, his father is also James, also a shipwright (not shown as deceased). Mary is aged 22, spinster, no occupation, of 6 Jordan Street, he father is Michael Hayden, Inspector of Police (not shown as deceased). The witnesses are John Cusack and Joseph Curtis. It appears from the church record examined that both bride and groom both signed their own names. 1860 A daughter is born to the couple. 12 August 1860 Mary gives her address as 59 George Street for the birth of Elizabeth. George Street is an older name for what came eventually to be called Gelling Street by the time of the 1871 census following renaming of various streets in toxteth park.. 1861 Mary, aged 29, a family milliner is with her family and parents at 59 George Street for the census. 1861 Mary gives the same address for the death of Elizabeth on 28 September 1861, aged 14 months 1863 Mary gives her address as 47 George Street, Toxteth for the birth of Elizabeth McGrevey (so spelled). James is shown on the birth certificate as a Shipwright, journeyman. As the family are clearly at number 59 in both the 1861 and 1871 censuses, it is assumed that Elizabeth was born at the house of a friend or neighbour, whilst Mary was actually living at 59. The household at number 47 Is Robert and Sarah Kneen, Robert is a police officer (as is Michael Hayden). 1871 The family are at 59 Gelling Street in the 1871 census under the name of McGravey. Mary aged 36 born Middlesex, London, is with husband James. Also living there are Mary's parents Michael and Ellen Hayden. It has thus been possible to confirm Mary's maiden name and re-affirm her London origins, which were first found in the 1881 census. Mary's five known daughters are all present. There is just a possibility that a 'missing' child (perhaps a son Lloyd) may have grown up and left home but this seems unlikely as timings may not fit. It should be possible to confirm this once the marriage of James and Mary is finally traced. 1881 Michael and Ellen Hayden have vanished. As they were respectively 63 and 64, in 1871, they were assumed to have died. In fact Ellen died in 1875 and Michael in 1879. Remarkably the rest of the family are still at the same address at 59 Gelling Street. Mary is now aged 44 born London, Middlesex, no occupation given. James McGrevy is recorded and there are four daughters remaining with James and Mary, Ellen McGrevy having married in January of 1881 and left home. 1891 Some time after 1881 the family moved to 128 Park Road, which was to become the home of this branch, and relatives, for the next 50 years. In the 1891 census James, 58, is a Shipwright, employed, born Harrington, Cumberland living with Mary also aged 59 and born Middlesex, London. Mary is shown as a Wardrobe Dealer. The same 4 daughters are at home as in 1881. Ellen still being absent. 1894 Mary's daughter Elizabeth McGrevy married Samuel Jabez Williams. Elizabeth is shown as living at 128 Park Road, thus it is assumed that Mary (and James) were there in the light of 1891 and 1901 censuses. 1901 in the census Mary McGrevy, aged 69, worker, born London is still at 128 Park Road with James and children Susan, Mary and Ellen (now Farrington). Elizabeth has married (1894) and is living nearby. Sarah has married, moved away and died in the 10 years since 1891 census. 1902 Mary died from Cirrhosis of the Liver, Syncope, aged 68, at 128 Park Road, Toxteth. The informant is her daughter Susan of the same address. |
