1870  Johanna first appears on record in 1870, in Liverpool on her marriage certificate, although earlier censuses have not been examined.  She was married to Daniel Whelan (a.k.a. Phelan) who is the father of Elizabeth, Bridget, John and Johanna.  No other children are known, this is based on the 1881 census alone, as there are no children in 1871 and Daniel died in 1885. The long gap between the birth of Elizabeth and Bridget suggests that there may perhaps be another child who, like Johanna, died in infancy.

1871 Johanna and Daniel are found in April, for  the census at 47 Westmoreland Street.

1871 Elizabeth is born in October at 35 Hopwood Street, Liverpool

1875 Bridget is born, presumed to be W. Derby 8b 460, December 1875 as no other births of Bridget Whelan occur in Liverpool between Jan 1875 and Dec 1877. No certificate applied for yet.

1878 John is born, presumed to be Liverpool 1878 March 8b 34 as no other John Whelans occur in 1878 or to June 1879. No certificate applied for yet.

1885 Daniel Whelan died (of TB) in 1885 and Johanna is shown as the informant still at 1 House 2 Court Ashfield Street.

1887 Johanna's second marriage, to Thomas Keegan, takes place.  He is presumed to be the same Thomas Keegan who is with the family as a lodger in the 1881 census.

1891 of the children only John is found. The 1891 census shows him living with Johanna who has now remarried.

1901 Johanna is with her daughter Elizabeth and Elizabeth's husband John Edward Christian at Beloe Street in toxteth.

1920 Joanna died at Beloe Street from Bronchitis and Cardiac syncope, aged 73. She is recorded as a widow to Thomas.  She did not therefore marry again after the death of Thomas, which was before the 1901 census when she is shown as a widow, living with her daughter Elizabeth Whelan and John Edward Christian in Beloe Street.
