1838 (approx) Jane was born to Henry Aspinall and Elizabeth Hughes. Perhaps this corresponds to the christening 8 Jan 1838, St Peter, Liverpool. Father- Henry Aspinall, Mother - Elizabeth.

1847 28th December, William Aspinall is born to Henry Aspinall a Cabinet Maker and Elizabeth Aspinall formerly Hughes giving a presumed address for Jane of Nash Grove, St Martins, Liverpool (close to subsequent residences of the family).

1851 Census (HO 107/2185) shows the family at Number 2 Court, Mansfield Street which is off St. Anne Street. . The census shows
Henry Aspinall, head, marr, aged 40, Cabinet Maker, b. Liverpool.
Elizabeth Aspinall, wife, 41, b. Chirk, Shropshire (now part of Wrexham C.B.).
Jane, daughter, unmarr, 13, scholar, b. Liverpool
Henry, son, 8, b. Liverpool
Ann, daughter,6, b. Liverpool
Wm, son,3, b. Liverpool (William occurs again in 1871 census with the now married Jane)

1860 Jane Aspinall married Robert Edwards on 15th October 1860 in Liverpool. No precise ages are given for bride or groom, only 'of age'.  Jane is a spinster, her father Henry is a Cabinet maker. The couple give their address only as 'Portland Street'. This runs between Scotland Road and Vauxhall road close to all previous addresses for both families and close to Summer Seat. (n.b. Jane's father Henry lives close to the couple in Walker's buildings.)

1861 they are not yet found in the census and the (partial) index to the census gives no Robert or Jane Edwards who fit.  It is worth noting that Hugh is born to them soon after census date, on 28 May 1861, at 54 Summer Seat, close to Portland Street, Robert gives his occupation as butcher, journeyman. Checking 54 Summer Seat in the 1861 census reveals the family of John and Mary Donnelly, but significantly three KN, people, (presumed 'not known' ), the KN husband is a lodger, Pork Butcher, aged 26 born KN, the wife is a Pork Butchers wife, aged 24, born KN and they have with them a KN son, aged 4, born KN given as a scholar. The address, occupation and lack of another candidate push co-incidence and these KN people are assumed to be mine.

1871 census. The family have moved to toxteth and are at 5 Prince William Street, Toxteth Park.  Robert is 28 a joiner, Jane 29, no occupation). With them is son Hugh (10) a scholar and Hugh's siblings - Robert Edwards(12), John Edwards(4), Elizabeth Edwards(1). In addition there is the presence of Jane's brother, William Aspinall, (18, Dock Labourer) a brother-in-law to Robert (1840), the head of the house. This is certainly the correct family group.

1878 They are at 7 Wolfe Street, for the birth of Alice.

1881 census the couple are at 123 Wolfe Street. Robert (aged 41, wood turner) and Jane (41, dressmaker). Robert (1860) who would be 22, is missing and may well have married and left home. Hugh (20) is still with his parents, he is a wood turner, children with the family are John Edwards (14), Elizabeth Edwards(11), Ann Edwards(9), Ellen Edwards(7), William Edwards(5), Alice Edwards(2).

1883 on 17th May, aged 42, Jane died of Typhus Asthenia (the Asthenia is a debiliating weakness, a description rather than the disease itself). She died in the workhouse in Toxteth Park, which may have been to do with the infectious nature of the disease and hospital care as the workhouses were, by this time, rudimentary hospitals.  The master of the workhouses G.G.Cartwright is the informant. Jane is shown as the wife of Robert Edwards, joiner of 123 Wolfe Street.  (see here squalid liverpool)

A second possible death was also traced Jane Edwards - March 1890, Toxteth Park 8b 172 aged 50,
this is not 'my' Jane the certificate is HERE however.

(1891 census at 23 Lamport Street, Toxteth. Robert is now a widower aged 51 living with daughter Alice 12. Alice and Robert have been traced in 1901 when Robert is again shown as a widower).
