1861 Hugh was born on 28th May 1861 at 54 Summer Seat, Liverpool, the son of Robert Edwards (Butcher journeyman) and Jane Aspinall (occupation unknown). The birth was registered by Jane, who was unable to sign her name ('mark of').

1871 for the census the family are at 5 Prince William Street, Toxteth Park.  Hugh is a scholar, aged 10.  His age is correct, names of both parents fit (Robert 28, joiner, Jane 29, no occupation). The names of Hugh's siblings (Elizabeth Edwards, John Edwards, Robert Edwards) tie in to later knowledge of them. In addition there is the presence of Jane's brother, William Aspinall, a brother in law (to Robert, head of the house). This is certainly the correct family grouping.

(The sibling birth certificates for Elizabeth, John and Robert (jnr) would add addresses and occupations to Robert 1861).

1881 For the census at 123 Wolfe Street. Hugh is 20, still living with his parents - Robert (aged 41, wood turner) and Jane (41, dressmaker). Hugh is also a wood turner, siblings of Hugh with the family are John Edwards (14), Elizabeth Edwards(11), Ann Edwards(9), Ellen Edwards(7), William Edwards(5), Alice Edwards(2).

The sibling birth certificates for Ann, Ellen, William and Alice would add addresses and occupations to Rober 1861t.

1889 sees the marriage of Hugh (age 27 [he is in fact 28]) to Mary (formerly) Bird (nee McCulloch). They live at 20 Wellington Terrace, Toxteth. Hugh is now a dock labourer, father Robert is shown as a Cabinet Maker.  Despite the change of occupation of Hugh, this is my family.

1891 sees the birth of son Hugh, Hugh senior is still a dock labourer.  They are living at 27 Wolfe Street in Toxteth, and on 5 April 1891 for the census they are also at this address. This is the home of Charles McCulloch (father of Hugh's wife, Mary nee McCulloch). There are other McCullochs in the home, siblings of Mary.  With Hugh and Mary is Martha, aged 5, shown as daughter but in fact Hugh's step-daughter from Mary's first, short-lived, marriage to George Byrd.  Also Jane aged 1 and Hugh aged 2 months. Hugh is claiming 28 [in fact he is 29, almost 30].

Of possible interest is the presence of Isabella ?Grey? in the house, born Edinburgh a widow with children. Hugh's wife, Mary, despite being shown as being born Liverpool in this census, was born either in Berwickshire or Roxburgh according to previous censuses. Isabella's maiden name might be of interest to shed light on the McCullochs, as Isabella is shown as being born in Edinburgh.

1901 The family are at 10 Wolfe Street, Hugh is 39 (correct), Mary is 35. With them daughter Jane (11),  Hugh (10), Elizabeth (4), Henry (2), Martha Bird (now shown as a stepdaughter to Hugh, 14, cigarette maker). John who was apparently born in 1901 is not shown which points to a birthday after census day (31/03/1901).

1905 when Mary Edwards was born, the family are still at 10 Wolfe Street, Hugh is a Dock Labourer.

1911 Gore's directory shows Hugh Edwards at 11 Pickwick Street.  Hugh is thought to have lived here until his death in 1934, when the house became the home of his daughter Elizabeth Edwards.

1914 sees the marriage of Elizabeth, the address is again 11 Pickwick Street.  Hugh is shown as a stevedore.

1927 on the marriage of Mary Edwards, Hugh is shown as a Ship's Carpenter based on information provided on the certificate by Mary.

1934 Hugh died, 30 June 1934, he was aged 73. Death was of Carcinoma Ventriculi, Cancer of the Stomach.  Hugh had been living at 11 Pickwick Street but died at 126 Smithdown Road which is Sefton General Hospital

Notes/
Hugh's daughter Mary Edwards said, to my mother that Hugh was a heavy drinker, who came home drunk, broke the furniture and then next day fixed it again!
