1859 Based on census data, Ellen McGrevy was born in Liverpool around 1859, the eldest (known) child of James McGrevy and Mary Hyden. 1861 Ellen aged 2, born Liverpool is with her parents James and Mary, and her grandparents Michael and Ellen, at 59 George Street (George Street was re-named Gelling Street between 1861 and 1871). 1871 A recent breakthough finds the family at 59 Gelling Street in the 1871 census all under the name of McGravey, meaning that previous searches will need to be re-done with this new spelling variant and may reveal other data. Ellen is with all of her known siblings. With Ellen and her parents, James and Mary, are Mary's parents and it has thus been possible to trace Mary's maiden name for the first time and re-affirm her London origins. 1881 On 10 February 1881 she marries Robert Christian Farrington at the district church of St Pauls Church in the parish of Walton on the Hill in Liverpool (ref., Liverpool, W.Derby 8b 631, Liverpool reference is 2016WD/1/285. It was assumed that this was St. Pauls Prince's Park, Toxteth Park but it is in fact St Pauls in Kirkdale, North Shore. Sarah McGrevy, her sister, is one witness, James Wallace is the other. Neither groom nor bride give their ages, simply 'full age''. Robert is a mariner, batchelor living at 75 Egerton Street, (Egerton Street is parallel to Upper Parliament Street just by the junction with Catherine Street. George, his father, is a custom house officer. Ellen gives her address as 59 Gelling Street, a spinster, no occupation and her father is James McGrevy a Ship's carpenter. It is perhaps significant that she signed her wedding certificate, and hence could read and write, meaning in turn that the spelling of her surname may now to be regarded as accurate. 1881 Ellen is not with the family in Gelling Street for the census, but cannot be found with Robert either. The only Ellen Farrington found in Liverpool is a 'house maid domestic servant' aged 23, born Liverpool, (b. 1858). This age would fit. She is close to the family home at the Royal Southern Hospital, Caryl Street for the census. If Robert was a mariner, then he could be at sea and this might explain the fact that the couple are otherwise unaccounted for in the 1881 census. This is the last trace of Robert, although Ellen remains 'married' rather than a widow in later records. 1891 Some time between 1881 and 1891 Ellen's parents James and Mary moved to 128 Park Road, which was to become the home of some of this branch (and relatives) for the next 50 years. Ellen is missing from this census for now. Neither Ellen nor Robert can be found in the 1891 census and there are no close contenders. 1901 In the census of 1891 Ellen is back at the family home again, now called Ellen Farrington, she is a Domestic housekeeper, still shown as married (rather than widowed), aged 39, (actually 43) living with her parents and siblings at 128 Park Road. This is the last certain trace of Ellen. There is the possibility that they may have emigrated. Perhaps this is the line which connects to Lloyd McGreevy in New Zealand, although he would presumably not have had this surname if he was a son of this marriage. |
