Although he would have been 22, in 1914, at the start of WW1 Edward Alfred was not called up and is thought to have been something to do with the church, or priesthood, at this time. This changed as he was a dock clerk at the time of his marriage in 1921, when he was aged 29. The witnesses to this marriage were Robert J Williams (brother of Lilian) and Eleanor Christian (sister of Edward Alfred).  The marriage was at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.  This was the family church for many years and most, if not all, of the birth records of Edward Alfred's 10 siblings are here, as well as those of the children of his own marriage, Winifred Mary Christian and John Joseph Christian.

After this the family lived for many year at 128 Park Road in an extended household centred around the dressmaking business and shop.  This probably started from the trade of Ellen Foley (1807) (a family milliner)  in the 1860s.  The business was followed by her daughter Mary Hayden (1834), and after her marriage to James McGrevy it passed firstly to her daughter Elizabeth McGrevy, then to Susan McGrevy and her family and finally to Elizabeth's daughter Lilian Jane Williams, the wife of Edward Albert. With the death of Lilian Jane in 1941, the business ceased, and the remaining family moved to 32 Errol Street.

Edward Alfred originally had an office job, and is shown as a dock clerk on his marriage certificate, but lost this at some stage, it is presumed during the slump and at some time after this became tram driver.  He apparently knew someone who got the job for him. He was given a 5 year safe driving medal by the National Safety First Association dated 1938 so is assumed to have got the job around 1933 or so.  He worked on routes 20 and 21, Dingle to Fazakerley. This was for at least five years as he was awarded a long service medal, which is still in the family. Edward Alfred was still a Tramcar Driver at the time of his death in 1949, when he collapsed and died in Belmont Road, Liverpool. * His place of death, 42 Belmont Road is actually Belmont Road Hospital.
