Formerly thought to be named Katharine McBurnie this was a surname of convenience until facts were established. Despite being told that this was her name there is no evidence yet to support this.  No marriage can be traced England or Scotland with these names.  No children have been found with Charles McCullough/McCulloch as father and McBurnie as mother although suitable births have been extensively examined, both England and Scotland.

It has so far not been possible to trace the marriage of Charles and Catherine, this work continues. None has been found in England or Wales from Jan 1857-Dec 1866 (Catherine Sheridan/Sheriden has given several matches Jan 1860-Dec 1864, currently being matched but none seem to be correct and none match a suitable husband's name.

1866 Catherine is first reliably found for the birth of daughter Mary at 2 Combermere Street, Toxteth park, Liverpool. (The birth of Sarah has not yet been found). Catherine would be around 28 years of age.

1870 at 23 Mann Street on 5th December for the birth of son Charles. Catherine would be around 33 years of age.

1871 in census at 23 Mann Street, born Scotland, aged 33

1872 still at 23 Mann Street for the birth of James, Catherine would be around 34 years of age.

1875 2 Court, Cooper Street, Toxteth Park Liverpool 15/03/1875 birth of Patrick, Catherine would be around 39 years of age.

1881 census 72 Henderson Street, Toxteth, born Berwickshire, Scotland

1885 and 1889, for the first and second marriages of daughter Mary McCulloch, Catherine is presumed to be with husband Charles and family.

1891 census finds her at 27 Wolfe Street, for both the census and for Hughs's birth as the family are all sharing the house when Hugh is born. Born (after a long examination!) in Roxburgh, (adjacent to Berwickshire).

Not wishing to write off the family tradition, research does show just one McBurnie - McCullagh (note spelling) connection in Liverpool.  This is in 1871 census and is at 415 Scotland Road where William McCullagh (b. Ireland) is married to Tomima McCullagh, (b. Scotland) however in the household there is a step daughter Elizabeth McBurnie aged 8 born Liverpool.  This daughter will belong to Tomima who has been widowed after a marriage to a McBurnie.  Tomima is an unusual name.  The name is in the IGI once only, for a birth of Elizabeth McBurnie on 19th Jan 1863.  The christening is on 01 March 1863 at Oldham Street Presbyterian, Liverpool, Lancs. Father is Robert McBurnie, mother is Thomima Tyrie (note spellings). Oldham Street is between Leece Street and Mount Pleasant ** in city centre.  There are only 6 records in the IGI for births of Elizabeth McBurnie and  all are duplicates, meaning only three are actual events.  In one case father is John William McBurnie mother is Elizabeth, in other Thomas McBurnie and Elizabeth are parents.  The third is Thomima and Robert -note spelling).

**It may also be noted that there is a Mary McCulloch, b. Scotland, aged 44 widow shopkeeper living at 38 Pilgrim St in 1871, with family. The family are only given initials thus J. son 15, E daughter 13, W H son, 12, A daughter 8, all b. Liverpool . There is also a visitor Emma Whaley, 31, b Shropshire. Pilgrim street is adjacent to Oldham Street and close to Flint Street which figures in 1881 as the home of Tomima, husband and Arthur son. J, son Liverpool St Phillip, RG10/3783 24, Folio 151 pg 29.

It may turn out to be significant that in 1871 there is a family of McBurnies at 310 Beaufort Street, this is between Mann Street and Henderson Street. Both streets have connections to my family at this time and later. There are no other significant McBurnie families in Lancashire as far as I can establish.

NB in 1891 census there is a name that looks like 'Fry' or 'Grey' with the household in Wolfe Street, first name Isabella, born Edinburgh, she may repay research
